What exactly is a bolo tie? 

A traditional bolo tie is made up of a leather braided cord with silver or metal tips. The cord is threaded through a slide or bolo tie clasps that are made out of metal, wood, beads and other such materials. You can even try to make your own bolo ties.

 

The clasps that are attached in the end are decorated with western motifs but can also be modernized with several different designs. Common motifs that you might have seen are thunderbirds, horses, cattle skulls, bears and bulls. The traditional bolo ties are also usually characterized with turquoise or other such semi-precious stone, and some are even embellished with native American indigenous beading. 

You might even wear bolo ties being called by other names such as bola tie, cowboy tie or string tie, but as long as it is a cord clasped together and worn like a tie, it is considered as a bolo tie.
